What is different about industrial steel?
A house slab carries a static, predictable load. An industrial floor carries point loads from machinery, rolling loads from forklifts and racking, and loads that cycle up and down for the life of the building. That changes the grade you specify and the consistency you need across the supply.
Heavier and dynamic loads
Static loads are the easy case. With dynamic and repeated loads, grade matters most. A bar that yields under load and recovers is doing work a brittle bar cannot. That is why heavy plants are often specified in Fe 550, and seismic-zone or high-dynamic-load facilities in Fe 550D.
TMT bar grades for industrial structures
All RD TMT bars are made to IS 1786:2008 and carry the ISI mark under licence CM/L-6200193709.
| Grade | Yield min | Elongation min | UTS/YS | Industrial fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fe 500 | 500 N/mm² | 12% | ≥ 1.08 | Warehouses, sheds, light industrial |
| Fe 550 | 550 N/mm² | 10% | ≥ 1.06 | Heavy plants, multi-storey industrial |
| Fe 550D | 550 N/mm² | 14.5% | ≥ 1.08 | Seismic zones, dynamic loads |
| Fe 500 and Fe 550 | |
|---|---|
| Carbon | 0.30% |
| Sulphur | 0.055% |
| Phosphorus | 0.055% |
| Sulphur + phosphorus | 0.105% (Fe 500), 0.100% (Fe 550) |
| Fe 550D | |
| Carbon | 0.25% |
| Sulphur | 0.040% |
| Phosphorus | 0.040% |
| Sulphur + phosphorus | 0.075% |
Low carbon keeps the bar weldable on site. Low sulphur and phosphorus improve ductility and cut the risk of brittle fracture, which is what a dynamic or seismic industrial structure needs. Fe 550D has the tightest limits of the three.
Which grade for which industrial element
- Warehouses, sheds and light industrial buildings: [Fe 500](/tmt-steel-bars/fe-500-steel-bars) covers most of the work.
- Heavy plants, multi-storey industrial buildings and high dead loads: Fe 550 is the common specification.
- Higher seismic zones, or heavy dynamic and cyclic loading: [Fe 550D](/tmt-steel-bars/fe-550d-steel-bars).
- If the drawing names a grade, buy that grade. Our team will confirm it fits the load case before the steel is loaded.
TMT bar sizes and weights
Industrial work uses the full standard range, in 12 m standard length, and skews to the larger sizes.
| Size | Weight per metre | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 8 mm | 0.395 kg/m | Ties and stirrups |
| 10 mm | 0.617 kg/m | Light slabs, floors |
| 12 mm | 0.888 kg/m | Slabs and lighter beams |
| 16 mm | 1.580 kg/m | Beams and columns |
| 20 mm | 2.470 kg/m | Columns and heavy beams |
| 25 mm | 3.850 kg/m | Heavy columns and footings |
| 32 mm | 6.310 kg/m | Heavy foundations, machinery bases |
16 mm and above dominate the columns and beams. 25 to 32 mm go into heavy footings and machinery foundations.
How RD TMT makes TMT bars for industrial work
Quenched and self-tempered
RD TMT is a TMT mill. The hot bar is rolled to size on German TEMPCORE lines, then quenched with water. The outer layer cools fast into a hard skin; the core cools slowly and stays ductile. That balance lets one bar hold a high yield strength and still deform under load.
Every dispatch tested, every bar traceable
Every batch is tested in our in-house lab, NABL accredited to ISO/IEC 17025:2017. Each dispatch leaves with a test certificate tied to the heat number, so a project engineer can match the bars on site to the lab results.
- NABL lab accreditation
- NABLT0826KA18884
- BIS licence, IS 1786
- CM/L-6200193709
- On every dispatch
- Heat number to test certificate
That matters most on large orders. When a project runs to dozens of dispatches over months, tying every bundle to a heat and a certificate is what the client or the inspector will ask for.
Why grade and traceability matter in industrial work
Dynamic and cyclic loads
An industrial floor is loaded and unloaded thousands of times. Fe 550D’s 14.5% elongation and 1.08 UTS/YS ratio are what let it absorb that energy, which is why it goes into the highest-demand industrial and seismic structures.
The bend and rebend test
IS 1786:2008 requires a bend and rebend test in every size. The bar is bent to a set angle, bent back, and must show no cracks on the bent surface. RD TMT bars pass it in every size from 8 mm to 32 mm.
Where TMT bars are used in industrial structures
Factories and warehouses
The largest use. Factories, warehouses and distribution centres are RCC structures, and they take the bulk of the tonnage. Light industrial work is commonly Fe 500; heavier, multi-storey plants Fe 550.
Heavy foundations and machinery

Machinery foundations, crane bases and equipment plinths carry concentrated, often dynamic loads. They use 25 to 32 mm bars, and the grade has to match the load case exactly.
Platforms, silos and tanks
Mezzanines, silos and tank structures see mixed dead and live loads, often in harsh environments. Fe 550 or Fe 550D is common here, depending on the load and the seismic zone.

A simple TMT bar checklist for industrial projects
- Check the grade on the tag.
Confirm it matches the structural drawing.
- Look for the ISI mark.
The bar should carry the ISI mark and the RD TMT name.
- Match the test certificate.
Every dispatch should carry a NABL test certificate traceable to the heat number.
- Check the ribs.
The rib pattern should be even in pitch and height, for proper concrete grip.
- Check straightness.
Bars should be straight and free of kinks and twists.
- Check the size.
Confirm each diameter matches the bar schedule.
If a bar fails any of these, it does not belong in an industrial structure that has to carry load for decades.
Frequently asked questions
What grade of TMT bar is best for an industrial structure?
It depends on the load case. Fe 500 covers light industrial work like warehouses and sheds. Fe 550 is common for heavy plants and multi-storey buildings. Fe 550D is specified for seismic zones and high-dynamic-load facilities.
What is the difference between Fe 550 and Fe 550D?
Both yield at 550 N/mm². Fe 550 has a minimum elongation of 10%; Fe 550D has 14.5%, a higher UTS/YS ratio and tighter chemistry. Fe 550D is preferred for seismic and high-dynamic-load industrial work.
What sizes of TMT bar are used in industrial structures?
Industrial work skews to the larger sizes. 16 mm and above dominate columns and beams, and 25 to 32 mm go into heavy footings and machinery foundations. The exact sizes come from the drawing.
Why do industrial structures sometimes need a higher grade than a house?
They carry heavier and often moving, repeated loads from machinery, forklifts and cranes. That calls for higher strength and, in seismic zones, higher ductility.
How do I verify the TMT bars on a large industrial order?
Match the heat number on each bundle to the NABL test certificate. Every RD TMT dispatch carries a certificate traceable to its heat.
Is RD TMT's steel BIS certified?
Yes. RD TMT bars are made to IS 1786:2008 and carry the ISI mark under BIS licence CM/L-6200193709, with a NABL test certificate on every dispatch.
What is the price of TMT bars for industrial projects in Karnataka?
Price depends on grade, size, tonnage and the current market rate. Industrial pricing is often worked on contract or order volume. Contact our team for a quote.
How do I get a quote?
Send the grade, sizes, tonnage and delivery location, and our team will prepare a quote within one business day.
