In 2013, RD TMT Steels India set out to build the most advanced steel mill in South India: not the biggest, but the most trustworthy.

For years, builders in the region had bought rebar on trust and found out on site what they had actually paid for. The answer was a plant at Somanahalli, Mandya, with its own furnaces, its own rolling lines and its own lab, so that nothing about the steel had to be taken on faith.

That plant now rolls close to 2.5 lakh tonnes a year on German TEMPCORE lines. Every heat is still analysed before it casts, every dispatch still leaves with its test certificate, and the order book runs from an airport taxiway to a school building.

Chapter 01 · Founded
Founded in Karnataka
RD TMT Steels India Pvt. Ltd. is incorporated in Karnataka and ground breaks at Somanahalli Industrial Area, Maddur Taluk. The brief is settled before the first footing is poured: an integrated mill, with melting, casting, rolling and testing on one site.
2015
Chapter 02 · Technology
German TEMPCORE lines commissioned
The rolling mill goes live on German quench-and-self-temper technology: a hard martensitic rim over a ductile ferrite-pearlite core, the signature of earthquake-resistant rebar, and the reason a bar can be both strong and bendable.

Chapter 03 · Systems
Quality, environment and safety certified
Management systems are certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001. Per-heat spectrometric analysis and mechanical testing stop being good practice and become standing procedure: no heat casts until its chemistry is read.

Chapter 04 · Ecolabel
The GreenPro ecolabel
The full 8-32mm TMT range earns CII's GreenPro ecolabel, in recognition that RD TMT steel is made responsibly, from DRI-based melting through to dispatch. The registration is active across all seven diameters, which makes the range a straightforward specification on green-rated projects.

2.5 lakh tonnes a year
The mill runs at close to 2.5 lakh tonnes a year, supplied through a dealer and project network that covers South India. What has not changed is the gate: no heat casts unread, and no lorry leaves without the paper that proves what is on it.

Every heat, tested

Spectrometric chemistry and mechanical testing on every heat, in our own lab, before the steel is cleared to move. No bar ships without its test certificate.

German TEMPCORE rolling

Quench-and-self-temper lines hold the hard rim over a ductile core, heat after heat, at close to 2.5 lakh tonnes a year, so the thousandth bar behaves like the first.

A dealer and project network spanning South India, built to keep the delivery dates the company is known for. A missed window stops a whole crew; we plan around that.

The mill was built to earn one thing: the confidence to specify the next fifty years of buildings with RD TMT on the drawing.

A steel mill is a dangerous place to work, and the only acceptable number of people hurt in it is none. The plant runs an ISO 45001 safety system to hold that line: mandatory PPE, hazard communication on the floor, and shift-wise training that is repeated rather than filed away.
